Newcomers usually need (1) a German overnight PLZ, (2) vehicle and driver details, and (3) an eVB before Zulassung. Without eVB, registration offices will not issue plates. After registration, keep the insurer informed of plate numbers and address changes.

If you held car insurance abroad, ask your previous insurer for a written no-claims statement (often called a bonus/malus or SF certificate). German insurers may recognise claim-free years, but formats and acceptance rules differ — translate documents when needed and keep originals.

Foreign licences are often valid for a limited period after establishing residence; check local Fahrerlaubnis rules so the named drivers on the policy remain legal. Parking (street vs garage), annual mileage, and who else drives (spouse, colleagues) all affect the tariff.
